The California Energy Commission (CEC) revises the Energy Code every three years. The latest version, the 2022 Energy Code, was adopted by the CEC on August 11, 2021, and later approved by the California Building Standards Commission for incorporation into the California Building Standards Code. This new code promotes the use of efficient electric heat pumps, mandates electric readiness in new homes, extends solar photovoltaic and battery storage standards, enhances ventilation standards, and more. All building permit applications submitted on or after January 1, 2023, must abide by the 2022 Energy Code. NOTICE: The pre-rulemaking activities for the 2025 Energy Code have already begun. Stay informed, and be prepared and involved in the rulemaking process.
